The name expresses our belief that young people can be informed, positive and active contributors when they have space, resources and support. Kijana Hai Foundation is a youth-led non-profit organisation registered in Zanzibar in 2017. We work across Unguja and Pemba with young people, communities and institutions to address barriers to opportunity, wellbeing and participation.
KHF grew from the efforts of young Zanzibari activists who were already working on youth issues in their communities. The organisation was registered on 15 August 2017. Its early work was sustained through the founding team's own commitment, shaping an approach grounded in community relationships, practical action and accountability to young people.
To provide a platform to harness and nurture young people through informed, innovative and value-driven approaches as energetic instruments of compassion and change in their lives and the systems, structures and practices that affect them.
Recognised nationally and regionally as the leading provider of creative and effective community-based solutions that place young people at the centre of Zanzibar's development.
KHF's mandate covers all regions and districts of Unguja and Pemba. Our programmes are designed with attention to the different opportunities and barriers young people face across both islands.
We listen to young people, work with institutions and community partners, test practical responses and use evidence to improve them. Youth leadership, gender equality, disability inclusion, Pemba equity and safe participation shape how we plan and deliver our work.
KHF is governed by a Board of Trustees and led operationally by its management team. The Board oversees strategy, accountability and institutional integrity. Management coordinates programmes, partnerships, resources and day-to-day delivery.
Our team combines youth leadership, community experience and technical partnerships. We are committed to transparent decisions, safeguarding and learning from the people we serve.
